How do I install Whatplay without Google Play?

Reviewed for Whatplay 2.0.7

Besides Google Play, you can download Whatplay directly from this website, at whatplay.es/apk. It’s the same app, by Veltrix Studios, for phones, tablets and TVs with Android TV or Google TV that don’t have Google Play, or where you’d rather not use it. Only download it from here. It updates from within the app: when there’s a new version, it shows it to you and installs it.

On your phone or tablet (Android 7.0 or later):

  1. Open whatplay.es/apk in your phone’s browser and wait for the download to finish.
  2. Open the file from the download notification or from “Downloads”. The first time, Android asks for permission to install apps from that browser: tap “Settings”, turn on “Allow from this source” and go back.
  3. Tap “Install”. If Google Play Protect offers to scan it, let it: it does this with apps that don’t come from Google Play.

On Android TV or Google TV:

  1. On the TV, search for the “Downloader” app on Google Play and install it.
  2. Open it and type whatplay.es/apk. The first time, the TV asks for permission for Downloader to install apps: turn it on (it’s in the TV settings, under “Unknown sources”).
  3. When the download finishes, select “Install”.

You can also download it on your phone, move it to the TV with a file-sending app or a USB stick, and open it on the TV with a file manager.

If you already have Whatplay from Google Play, you don’t need this: keep using that one, which updates from Google Play. The two can’t be installed on the same device at the same time.
